ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER PUSHES ARMY PAST AIR FORCE
.A small group of Chapter members braved the cold to attend the Air Force/Army football game in Colorado Springs on November 5. Chapter members brought spouses, family members and guests. We started with a tailgate party with Spike’s “Mission Inn Restaurant”. Spike has been doing this for over 25 years that I know of, and he has a premium spot on the grounds. Spike served fried turkey and chili, and all who came brought supporting food. Most of Spike’s friends are ex-Air Force, but they really welcomed all of us old Army guys.
As for the game, the teams were evenly matched for a change. With our encouragement, Army came through and beat Air Force 27-24. As a local newspaper reported: “In the tradition of service academy games, the winning team’s hymn is played last in the post game salute. Army’s last win at the (Air Force) Academy was 31-6 in 1977.”
All in all, in despite of the temperature, it was an enjoyable day with helicopter friends who share a friendship founded on a special mutual experience in Vietnam.
