DRAFT MEETING MINUTES
18 FEBRUARY 2012
ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER
VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION
Vice President Hal Bergdahl called the meeting to order at 1000 hours at American Legion Post #1,
I-25 and Yale Avenue.
Members Present: Hal Bergdahl, Ed Fickes, Rick Beaver, John Grauff, John Hargleroad, Gary Hurelle, Steve Swaim, Fred Lyssy, Bill Robie, Carl Cavalluzzi, Al Harinck, John Gaines, Walt Wise, Carl Tafoya, Mike Shea, Dale House, Greg Mann, Dan Grigsby, Brian Wold, Robert Brightwell and Jim McNamee.
Hal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The January meeting minutes were approved (Motion-Greg Mann, second Fred Lyssy). (There was no meeting in December because of the holidays.) The Treasurers Report for February was approved (Motion-Al Harinck, second, Mike Shea).
Mike Hammer’s Funeral—Walt Wise and Jim McNamee talked about Mike Hammer’s funeral service on January 27th and passed around the service brochure with Mike’s obituary. Walt, Jim, Fred Lyssy, Rick Beaver and Gary Hurelle attended the service, which emphasized his tours as a Marine helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
Walt mentioned that Mike did a lot of things of which we weren’t aware, both during and after Vietnam, and that we should make a database of information on our members. Mike Shea also said that we should all make sure we have all of our military documentation, especially DD 214s, organized and ready for our heirs. They need the information for benefits.
The subject of buying bricks for our departed members for the Vietnam War Memorial in Mineral Wells, Texas came up. The members voted to have Jim purchase a brick in Mike’s memory (Motion-Fred Lyssy, second Al Harinck).
Member Oral Histories: John Gaines reported that he has followed up with the Library of Congress (see the January meeting minutes), and they are anxious to help us in this endeavor. This is a particularly opportune time because the LOC is making this effort a priority because of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Celebration. They are going to send John information, including the requirements. Some requirements are that anyone interested in participating will have to fill out a biographical information form (which we may want to keep copies of for the chapter—see above) and a release form. He also said that members could include pictures of events, medals, citations, etc. He is checking on the costs involved, if any. He will report back.
Greg Mann stated that he has a “Green Screen” set up, including video capability, and that we could use it for this project if we need to provide the equipment and setting.
Ed Fickes mentioned that he read magazine articles recently that contained anecdotes of non-combat “adventures” in Vietnam, such as “requisitioning” a generator. Perhaps we should write our own anecdotes for posterity. Mike Shea suggested sharing them on the RMC chat page and Fred Lyssy suggested putting them in a scrapbook for the Helicopter War Museum (HWM).
Draft meeting minutes, February 18, 2012 (continued)
Wings over the Rockies (WOR)–Hal went to the WOR annual meeting to continue researching the possibility of exhibiting the Helicopter War Museum (HWM) at WOR for Armed Forces Day or Memorial Day. WOR asked for more information about the HWM, which Hal will provide (Jim will send him the information).
The members discussed whether it would be preferable to have the HWM at WOR on the Armed Forces Day weekend, May 19th and 20th, or Memorial Day weekend. They voted to have it there on Armed Forces Day weekend for several reasons—we probably can get more members to staff it, we may be able to get better media coverage, it’s a day dedicated to recognizing and honoring our armed forces, etc. If Hal can arrange it, we will display the HWM at WOR on Armed Forces Day weekend. We probably will have the HWM delivered to the WOR hanger on Friday, May 18th, and have it taken back to Golden on May 21st. Ed will send out a duty roster.
St Patrick’s Day Parade—Because of onerous permitting and escort requirements for Bill McPherson to have his Mike Model Huey gunship in the parade with us, he has reluctantly withdrawn from the parade. As a result of not having the helicopter in the parade with us, the members decided that we will not participate. We will hold our March meeting on St Patrick’s Day at the American Legion (see below).
Chapter Ski Outing: As discussed at the January meeting, chapter members will have a ski outing in March. After discussion, the members settled on either March 28th or 29th, probably at Copper Mountain. Phil will coordinate when he gets back. The members who expressed interest in the outing were Rick Beaver, Fred Lyssy, Mike Shea, Carl Cavalluzzi and Walt Wise. More information will follow.
Channel 7 Memorial Day Program—Walt mentioned that Channel 7 had done a news clip last year about helicopter pilots on Memorial Day, for which he was interviewed. He said that he would check with them to see if they planned to do it again.
People House: Rick Beaver stated that the new People House East at Xanadu and Iliff is on schedule to open this summer (see the January minutes). He will gladly accept donations. Donors of over $100 will receive a letter of appreciation from People House.
Model Sales—Bill Robie has received more mahogany models to sell to benefit the HWM and now has a good inventory on hand. The list of models on hand and available to order is on the chapter website—www.vhparmc.org. If you have a request, please let him know.
HWM Displays—Bill stated that we should develop an enhanced display scheme for the HWM and also work to build more professional displays. We probably will pursue this idea at the April meeting. Along those lines, Greg Mann stated that we could have attractive posters and possibly helicopter pictures for sale made cheaply at Costco. He showed examples and also stated that he has developed the chapter 2012 calendar. He sent copies via e-mail on February 17th. If you didn’t get a copy, contact him and he will send you one.
2013 Christmas Party—John Grauff, who obviously is not a procrastinator, announced that he and his daughter have selected December 1st as the date for their annual Christmas party. Not to be left behind, Greg Mann said that the tentative date for his annual chapter Christmas party will be December 15th. Mark your calendars. Details to follow (but not anytime soon).
Draft meeting minutes, February 18, 2012 (continued)
Miscellaneous—
Annual Election–Jim mentioned that the chapter annual election will be held at the June meeting. We will vote for President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. (Note—The Vice President does not automatically become President.) Nominations should be submitted to Phil, Hal, or Jim, preferably by the May meeting.
Clothing Sales–Jim announced that he will be ordering more chapter clothing and hats in the next couple of months. If you would like to order one of the items, let him know. Several members ordered black jackets like the ones we bought several years ago. They are bomber jacket style, but without the epaulets and made with nylon with a polyester lining. They have an embroidered chapter logo. The last ones cost only $35. Jim will check on the current price and see if the jackets also come in navy blue.
Colorado Annual Report and IRS Form 990–Jim stated that the treasurer is responsible for submitting the Colorado annual business report to the Secretary of State and also IRS Form 990, a short form IRS report for non-profit organizations. Both are submitted electronically, the Colorado report by December 31st, and the IRS one by May 15th. Jim filed the Colorado Report in December and will file the IRS report before May.
National VHPA Notes–Jim mentioned that the current issue of The Aviator has a lot of details about the National Reunion. He also stated that VHPA is requesting members to register early for the New Orleans Reunion to help avoid unnecessary cost adjustments. Finally, he said that VHPA has changed its life membership dues structure and that members may want to look into converting to life membership.
Chapter Dues—If you would like to pay your $20 annual chapter dues by mail, please send a check made out to RMCVHPA to:

Upcoming Meetings—NOTE—These are all revisions–The March Meeting will be held on March 17th at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale. The April Meeting will be held in Golden at a TBD location on April 21st at 11:00 (this is 1 hour later than usual). Following the meeting and lunch, we will have a work party at the HWM to get the museum ready for the season. The May Meeting will be held at Wings over the Rockies on May 19th at 10:00, if we have the museum there.
Hal adjourned the meeting at 1140 hours.
