Published by under Meeting Minutes

19 FEBRUARY 2011 ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 1000 at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale Avenue. Members Present: Walt Wise, Phil Lanphier, Ed Fickes, John Grauff, Greg Mann, Mike Silva, Hal Bergdahl, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Steve Swaim, Carl Cavalluzzi, Donny O’Connor, John Gaines, and Jim McNamee.  Because we had several new and returning members, Walt had everyone introduce themselves. The minutes of the January meeting were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Walt Wise seconded).  The Treasurer’s Reports for January and February were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Walt Wise seconded). Dave Coyle’s Funeral: Ed reported that he, John Grauff, and Jim McNamee attended the funeral services on February 12th for Dave Coyle, who drove our museum to several venues beginning with the Memorial Day 2005 trip to Angel Fire.  Dave and his wife, Susan, who usually accompanied him, really enjoyed their trips with us.  Because of this, Susan asked that donations be made to our chapter in lieu of flowers.  The donations totaled $240, which Ed delivered from her to Jim.  She asked that the funds be used for the museum. Upcoming Events: Ed discussed the following events and passed around duty rosters.  He also will send sign up rosters on the chat page and through the webmaster (see his 2/21 message). April 8th–Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School: Ed reminded members about the tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640, are planning for Friday, April 8, 2011 from 1600 to 1830.  We are going to set up the Helicopter War Museum (HWM) late in the afternoon on April 7th and display it for students and the public from 0800 to1600 the day of the tribute. We will pack it up that evening. Kelly Gonzales, the Prairie View coordinator of the event, has requested that veterans interested in attending the event register at http://www.namvettribute.org. May 2nd–WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home Reception: Ed mentioned that the chapter again will host a reception for WWII veterans returning from a visit to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.  As usual, it will be at the DIA Signature Flight Facility from 2000 to 2100.  The chapter will provide refreshments (Ed will procure them). July 4th—American Heroes Air Show: Ed and Jim discussed this event.  We have been invited by to display the HWM at the United States Air Force Academy in conjunction with this air show and the AVTT Traveling Wall.  Ed is working on the details, but tentative plans call for setting the HWM up from 0800 to 1100 on the 4th and displaying it until 1900.  The American Heroes Aviation Network puts on several shows each year around the country (see their website –http://www.heroes-airshow.com/). Draft Meeting Minutes, 19 February 2011, continued July 16th—Fly In at the Hays, Kansas Airport: Ed and Walt discussed this event.  We have been invited by the airport manager to display the HWM at this fly in.  The organizers will pay the HWM transportation costs and also provide three motel rooms.  We will set the HWM up from 1400 to 1700 on the 15th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 16th, and pack it for the return trip the morning of the 17th. The members voted to attend this event if enough members sign up for the trip. National Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Events/Welcome Home: Jim mentioned again that chapter member Charles Bogle and the Fort Carson Retirees’ Association have scheduled a Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home Ceremony to be held at Fort Carson on June 10, 2011.  His committee has arranged for a Traveling Wall to be present.  The National Commemoration Commission also has agreed to participate in this event.  Jim will contact Charles to find out the exact dates. The Vietnam War Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year long Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  Walt Wise, Phil Lanphier, and Fred Lyssy are exploring this possibility.  For those interested, the Commemoration Commission’s website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/contact.aspx. HWM Outside Graphics: Ed mentioned that he has found a company that will do the HWM graphics for $9,000 to $13,000, which we don’t have right now.  A discussion followed about how beneficial it would be to have helicopter scenes on the HWM, but that we may want to start with only a few panels to keep costs down.  Picture sources and design also were discussed. HWM Revenue Idea: Greg Mann showed examples of various sized high quality but low cost calendars that were printed, with a photograph, by Costco.  He also talked about making a cd of members’ VN pictures.  He stated that these could be used as fund raisers for the HWM. Brick for Dave Coyle?: Ed mentioned that some members had discussed buying a brick in Dave’s memory for the VN War Museum in Mineral Wells, Texas.  After discussion, the members decided that a plaque for the museum would be more visible and appropriate and that idea was approved.  Ed will coordinate the effort, with a cost not to exceed $100. TRICARE Update: Mike Silva mentioned that TRICARE will begin covering veterans’ “kids” under 26 years of age who are not in school.  Contact him for more information.  He also said he is going to Ft Rucker in March if anyone wants him to pick up any mementoes. New Model Source: Bill Robie reported that he has obtained 20 Hueys, 12 CH 46s and other models for us to sell to raise money for the HWM.  The members voted to reimburse him for the purchase and for a sales tax license renewal and the HWM console purchase mentioned below (Ed moved, Walt seconded). HWM Center Console—Bill Robie reported that he had found a source on E-Bay for most of the instruments and radios that we need to complete the HWM’s cockpit display center console.  He purchased the lot for $374.  About the only things remaining for the display are hydraulic and engine control panels and a glare shield.  Bill’s source will try to obtain them. Draft Meeting Minutes, 19 February 2011, continued Chapter Chat Page: Bill mentioned that members could post information and updates on the chapter chat page at rmcvhpa@yahoogroups.com. Flag Donation: Carl Cavalluzzi donated a flag to the American Legion and also turned one over to be formally retired by the Legion.  John Hargleroad accepted the flags on behalf of the Legion. Dues Reminder:  Jim reminded members that 2011 dues ($20) are due.  He has received payment from several members by mail, and all of the members present at the meeting are now current as well.  If you would like to remit your dues by mail, please send a check made payable to RMCVHPA to: Jim McNamee 5 Summit Cedar Drive Littleton, CO 80127 Next Meeting: The March 19th meeting will be held in Golden, location and time TBD.  Bill Robie will arrange the location.  Walt stated that chapter member Jeff Roy, former MOPH National Commander, hopes to attend.  There will be a trailer work party for those able to stick around after the meeting. National Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Events/Welcome Home in 2011: Walt mentioned that the chapter committee to work on a grant for our Helicopter War Museum (HWM) in conjunction with this event will begin work soon.  For those who are unaware of this event, Jim stated that chapter member Charles Bogle and the Fort Carson Retirees’ Association have scheduled a Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home ceremony to be held at Fort Carson on June 10, 2011.  His committee has arranged for a Traveling Wall to be present for 7 to 9 days, including June 10th.  The National Commemoration Commission has agreed to participate in the Fort Carson event.  We are going to display the HWM for all or part of the week.

The Vietnam War Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year long Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  For those interested, the Commemoration Commission’s website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/contact.aspx.

Helicopter War Museum Improvement Committee: Rick Beaver mentioned that member Greg McMahon has donated some cabinets for the museum.  Rick wants to get started improving the museum displays, and asked that interested members meet with him after the meeting (several did).  He also showed a North Vietnam flag that his unit captured, and members discussed how to display it.  (Note—The March meeting will be held in Golden, followed by a museum work party.)

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School: Ed Fickes talked about the tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640, are planning on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. We are going to display the HWM the day of the tribute.  Jim and Ed are coordinating the museum’s appearance with Mr. Kelly Gonzales of Prairie View.  Ed stated that there has been a change to the schedule, and that we will be displaying the museum for only one day—Friday, April 8th, from 0800 to 1600.  Most of the students from the campus, which includes elementary and middle schools, will be visiting the museum. Ed will be sending out a duty roster soon to make sure we have enough members to help set up the HWM on Thursday afternoon, docent it on Friday, and pack it up Friday evening.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 15 January 2010, continued

Member Bill McPherson of Cripple Creek, CO, probably will have his UH-1M gunship there, too.  Chapter members will help docent it, as Rick Beaver did in Cripple Creek in 2009.

Kelly Gonzales, the Prairie View coordinator of the event, has requested that veterans who are interested in attending this event register at the event website: http://www.namvettribute.org.

National Vietnam War Commemoration Events/Welcome Home in 2011: Walt mentioned that the chapter committee to work on a museum grant in conjunction with this event will begin work soon. The National Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Commission has agreed to participate in the Fort Carson event.

The Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year Commemoration, and that is why we think there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM (see above).  For those interested, the Commemoration Commission’s website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com.

WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home: Ed mentioned that the chapter again will host the World War II Honor Flight Welcome Home Reception on Monday, May 2nd.  As usual, it will be at the DIA Signature Flight Facility from 2000 to 2100 hours.  The chapter will provide refreshments.  Ed will send out a sign up roster soon.

Possible HWM visit to the Hays, Kansas airport: Walt mentioned that the airport manager of the Hays airport would like us to display the HWM at his airport, possibly on July 4th.  Walt will call him back to get the details and report at the February meeting.

VHPA Aviator Deadline: Walt mentioned that the deadline for our chapter input to The Aviator is at the end of the month.  He asked Ed to prepare an article.  Mike Law mentioned that we should mention the Prairie View event.  (Note: Mike also displayed the new Membership Directory and 2011 calendar and discussed the 2011 VHPA Reunion.)

Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado Members:  Hello—Are you still there? Al Harinck mentioned that we used to have events in Colorado Springs to try to get our southern Colorado members involved again and asked if we planned to continue that effort.  Jim mentioned that we have had several events “down south,” but have had very limited participation since our luncheon in 2005.  The only members that have participated recently are Eric Brettschneider, Bill McPherson, and Charles Bogle, The members decided to keep trying, starting with the VN Vet Welcome Home/VN 50th Anniversary Celebration at Fort Carson in June.

In addition–Rick Beaver mentioned that we have several northern members (including Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska) that we haven’t seen for a while.  We should consider have a meeting or event in Thornton or another northern locale.  Rick will look into it.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 15 January 2010, continued

Chapter BBQ: Mike Law stated that we should start thinking about having another BBQ this summer since it is such a popular event.  We need to contact Don Rice and see if he is willing to be the chef again and if Leprino Aviation will allow us to have it at their facility again.  Also—this year, we will insist on reimbursing Don for his expenses (last year, he donated the meat and beans).

HWM Center Console—Bill Robie mentioned that we need most of the radio switches and the emergency hydraulics and main fuel switches for the HWM’s cockpit display center console.  Please contact him if you know of a source.

100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation: Mike Law mentioned that the Navy is going to host a celebration in San Diego, California February 12th.  It is going to be a big deal, with over 75 aircraft on display and lots of activities.  For information, go to www.mwrtoday.com/cona.

Chapter Chat Page: Bill mentioned that members could post information and updates on the chapter chat page at rmcvhpa@yahoogroups.com.

DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

20 NOVEMBER 2010

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 10:00 am at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale Avenue.

Members Present: Walt Wise, Ed Fickes, John Grauff, Brian Foote, Phil Lanphier, Fred Lyssy, Hal Bergdahl, Gary Hurelle, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Carl Cavalluzzi (new member), Dave Parvin (returning member), and Jim McNamee.

The minutes of the October meeting were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Gary Hurelle seconded).  The Treasurer’s Report for November was approved (Walt Wise moved, Brian Foote seconded).

Fort Carson Military Retiree Appreciation Day, October 16
–Jim McNamee mentioned this event again, stating that, although this was only a 4-hour event, we had over 200 visitors to the Helicopter War Museum (HWM).  Many of them were Vietnam veterans and Retired Enlisted Association members.  He stated that the cockpit display was a hit with the women visitors from the REA as well as the kids.

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School—Jim again mentioned that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640 are planning a tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Chapter members voted at the September meeting to take the HWM to the tribute.  Jim and Ed are coordinating the museum’s appearance with Mr. Kelly Gonzales of Prairie View.  Ed has arranged with Mr. Gonzales for us to display the HWM for 2 days, April 7 and 8, so that more students will be able to tour it. He will be sending out a duty roster soon to make sure we have enough members to help set up the HWM on Wednesday, docent it for both days, and pack it up on Saturday morning.  Member Bill McPherson of Cripple Creek, CO, will probably have his UH-1M gunship there, too.  Chapter members can help docent it, as Rick Beaver did in Cripple Creek in 2009.

During the discussion, Vice President Phil Lanphier asked if it would be possible to move the cockpit display outside during the event so that more students could experience it without creating a logjam inside the HWM.  Bill Robie said that it was feasible, and the members decided to look into the possibility.  They also decided that Jim should look for and buy a 10’X10’ 3-walled tent to house the exhibit in case of inclement weather.  Jim also mentioned that he would like to improve the HWM exhibits to make them more educational for students, which was discussed in conjunction with the National Vietnam Commemoration events mentioned below.

Jim will distribute a flyer about the Prairie View event in the near future.  He asked that members spread the word in the veteran community.  Jeff Roy has already distributed an announcement to the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) local chapters.

National Vietnam War Commemoration Events/Welcome Home in 2011: Jim mentioned that he had gotten more information from Charles Bogle (member from Westcliffe, CO) about the Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home ceremony to be held at Fort Carson on June 10, 2011.  His committee has arranged for a Traveling Wall to be present for 7 to 9 days, including June 10th.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 20 November 2010, continued

(Note—As previously noted—Ed has arranged with the AVTT Traveling Wall Organization for us to display the HWM whenever the wall is being displayed in our area.)  In addition, Charles said that the US Vietnam War Commemoration Commission (mentioned in last months’ minutes) has committed to hold events at Fort Carson during that time frame.  This is going to be a big event, and we plan to have the Helicopter War Museum there.

Jim mentioned that Charles has been in contact with one of the DOD organizers and provided him with the contact information.  The Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  Walt asked for volunteers to join him in seeking a grant, and Fred Lyssy and Phil Lanphier volunteered.  The committee will update the grant documents that Fred and Jim previously prepared and proceed from there.

Bill Robie mentioned that we ought to develop a “wish list” that we could use to determine the amount we should request, and then the committee should work with the curator (currently Jim) to make improvements.  Jim said that he would update the list he originally prepared in 2005 and give it to the committee.  Two of the big things we would like to accomplish if we get a grant would be to paint graphics on the sides of the trailer (Ed Fickes will research this) and build permanent display cabinets (Rick Beaver has been working on this).

As an aside—Phil mentioned that we should have some sort of history of the museum from the beginning to help with our grant efforts.  Jim said that we have pictures from most of the venues that we could use and Ed said that he had duty rosters and some after action reports from the venues.  They will provide them to the grant committee.

Jim passed out two newsletters from the Commemoration Commission, whose website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/contact.aspx.

New VA Hospital Update: Jim distributed a news release about the new VA Hospital to be built on the Fitzsimmons campus.  The hospital will cost $800 million and should be completed in 2014.

This brought up the question as to whether we would be hosting a Christmas Cookie Party at the VA Hospital Nursing Center, as we have done for the past 5 or 6 years.  Jim said that the VA had new rules for such events that, among other things, prohibited the use of anything other than packaged foods.  The members discussed this at a previous meeting, and decided not to host the event this year because of the restrictions.  This also precludes having another pig roast.

WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home—Ed introduced a motion that the chapter again host the welcome home at DIA.  Jim seconded, and the motion passed, as long as it doesn’t conflict with the Prairie View event.  It will be in April 2011.

PTSD compensation reminder: Walt reiterated a point from the September meeting—There are new rules concerning PTSD qualification that relax the requirements somewhat.  Helicopter pilots, especially those with purple hearts or medals for valor or heroism, should have an easier time proving that they suffer from PTSD.  There are also new rules concerning other compensation. Walt recommended checking with an MOPH, VFW, or American Legion service officer.

Models—Bill mentioned that we have lost our low cost source for models and that we have only about 20 left.  We don’t have any Hueys or Blackhawks.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 20 November 2010, continued

HWM Center Console—Bill also mentioned that we need most of the switches, etc, for the HWM’s cockpit display center console.  Please contact him if you know of a source.

Veterans Day 2011—Bill mentioned that we should make sure that we do something with the HWM for Veterans Day next year.  Possibilities include Greeley and Golden.

Member News—

New member Carl Cavalluzzi of Conifer attended his first meeting after joining the chapter at the Fort Carson Military Appreciation Day mentioned above.

Returning member Dave Parvin is a sculptor.  Two of his sculptures are featured in the Veterans’ Tribute Garden near the Butterfly Pavilion.

Brian Foote mentioned that member Terry Sullivan is retiring as the head of the Colorado Springs Travel Bureau at the end of November.

Party Reminders:  (Note—Information and directions have been provided previously.  If you have misplaced them, contact Jim McNamee at hawk36101@msn.com.)

–John Grauff’s Christmas party—John again passed out invitations and cordially invited all to his and Laurel’s (his daughter) annual Christmas party, to be held on December 4, 2010, at 6:00 pm.   He asked for RSVPs NLT November 24, 2010, although he said that you can just show up if your plans change.  If you are free that evening, you should make plans to attend.  The decorations and hospitality are first rate.  You don’t need to bring anything.

–Greg Mann’s Annual Chapter Christmas Party–Greg has scheduled his annual party at his home in Lone Tree for the Saturday after John’s party, December 11th.  This is a pot luck affair, so please RSVP to Greg by November 30th so that he can suggest a dish to bring. This is also a party you should plan to attend, as past parties have been enjoyed by all.

Next Meeting:  As is customary, there will not be a chapter meeting in December.

The January 15th meeting will be held at American Legion Post No.1 on I-25 and Yale at 10:00 am. Jim will begin collecting chapter annual dues ($20) at the meeting.

Walt adjourned the meeting at 11:15.

Ed Fickes earlier reported that this venue was a resounding success.  Chapter volunteers manned the museum, which was displayed in the vicinity of the Traveling Wall. –Fort Carson Military Retiree Appreciation Day, October 16. This was only a 4-hour event, but we had over 200 visitors.  Many of them were Vietnam veterans. Plans include having two Medal of Honor winners present, along with the Air Force Academy band and National Guard displays.  We will not have the HWM there. Efforts to “Resurrect” Johnson and Johnson’s iBOT Mobility System: Charles mentioned that the Americas Huey 091 Foundation and other organizations are trying to make a case for restarting iBOT production.  The iBOT is a stair-climbing wheelchair that gives wheelchair-bound patients the ability to climb stairs and elevate to standing position.  Johnson and Johnson stopped producing them about 2 years ago. Several clubs will be demonstrating the iBOT in Las Vegas on the weekend after Veterans Day, and they are looking for candidates to demonstrate it.  At least two iBOT recipients will be in attendance.  There may even be a handicapped ski event in conjunction with the effort.  American Airlines also is supporting this effort by providing air travel. DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

18 SEPTEMBER 2010

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

Ed Fickes, acting for President Walt Wise, called the meeting to order at 10:05 am at American Legion Post #1 on I-25 and Yale.

Members Present: Ed Fickes, Rick Beaver, John Hargleroad, Jeff Roy, Doug Neill, John Grauff, Bob Simms, Mike Silva, Mike Law, Hal Bergdahl, and Jim McNamee.  Also present—special guest Ms Sandy Ripe, Military Order of the Purple Heart.

The minutes of the June meeting, prepared by Jim McNamee, and the August meeting, prepared by Ed Fickes, were approved (Mike Law moved, Rick Beaver seconded).  The Treasurer’s Reports for July, August and September were approved (Mike Law moved, Rick Beaver seconded).

Agent Orange and VA updates from member Jeff Roy (Immediate past National Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart) and Sandy Ripe, MOPH National Service Officer: Jeff discussed how important it is to execute a Power of Attorney with a service officer (MOPH, VFW, American Legion, etc.) so that he/she is able to assist you in disability claims with the VA, including calling you if something changes that may affect you. You should execute a POA and register with the VA even if you don’t have a service connected disability in order to expedite any future claims.  Several of the members present executed POAs with Sandy.  You do not have to have a Purple Heart to be represented by the MOPH, but it is one of the few that has attorneys that are certified to represent you in appeals to VA decisions at the national level.  Also, spouses can and should sign POAs with a service officer so that they can be represented in the event of the veteran’s death or disability.

Jeff updated the members on several issues:

–New VA Hospital—The construction contract has been let, with completion scheduled for 2014.  The hospital will be a stand alone facility on the old Fitzsimmons campus.

–There are bills before Congress to expand VA benefits for spouses and children, including raising the age for coverage to 25.  The VA is an acceptable health care program under “Obamacare.”

– VA has determined that Arterial Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a service connected disability.  One day of active service qualifies you for compensation.

–In response to a question by Ed, Jeff stated that there is a possibility that funding for a study of the affects of Agent Orange in veteran’s offspring may be funded in the VA budget.

Sandy talked about her functions as an MOPH National Service Officer including:

–She discussed the process for filing a claim, and recommended strongly that interested members should contact her to execute a POA and start the process.  She works directly with the VA on claims and initial appeals.

–She recommended that veterans should get an Agent Orange evaluation if they haven’t already done so.

–The VA recently added Parkinson’s Disease and ischemic heart disease to the list of diseases that  VA currently presumes resulted from exposure to herbicides like Agent Orange. Ischemic heart disease is characterized by a reduced supply of blood to the heart that leads to chest pain.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 18 September 2010, continued

–The VA has issued new PTSD guidelines that should make it easier to qualify for benefits.  The disorder must be diagnosed by a doctor (with stressor evidence) and be service connected.

Helicopter War Museum (HWM): Rick stated that the cockpit display is installed, functions well, and looks good.  He also stated that Greg McMahon has obtained cabinets that we can use for display and storage.  Rick is going to pick them up and store them in the trailer until he can install them over the winter.  Finally, the mannequin that Phil Lanphier donated is in the museum.

August BBQ: Ed stated that the BBQ prepared by Don Rice at the Leprino Aviation hanger was “the best one yet.”  Jim stated that all expenses have been covered with money to spare, although Don has yet to let us know his expenses (including the cost of the pig and beans).

Ed also stated that we did not have any other organizations in attendance, as we had hoped.  This started a short discussion, initiated by Rick, about expanding the chapter to include helicopter pilots from other eras or crew members from the Vietnam War.  Mike Silva, a chapter member who also served in Iraq, pointed out that it is difficult to bridge the generation gap, and that we should consider only veterans from our era. The members agreed that the chapter could do what it wanted to do, as long as we changed the bylaws, including accepting non pilots as associate members, but did not make a decision about proceeding.  Rick suggested that we should consider holding another event, with more lead time, for crew members, etc.

VHPA 2011 Reunion: Mike Law passed out a flyer about the next reunion, to be held in Orlando July 5-10, 2011.  He stated that there will be several new things going on, including lunch with an astronaut.  He also stated that the registration cost should be lower, but that they could not negotiate deals on food, beer and tours.  He did say that you could buy 1/2 day tour/attraction packages that usually start at 2:00, and that should be enough time for us “senior citizens.”

Mike also showed off the 2011 VHPA calendar and announced that the 2012 reunion will be in New Orleans in late July.

Honor Flight Reception: Ed stated that the reception for 120 WW II vets and their escorts returning from D.C. on September 13th was a success.  Five chapter members were on hand to greet them and give them refreshments.  The next Honor Flight Welcome Home will be at DIA on Monday, May 2nd, at 8:00 pm. Ed mentioned that we should continue to support this worthwhile event, and the members agreed.

Helicopter War Museum Venues:

CSU/Pueblo, September 28-October 3. We have committed to have the museum there in connection with the Traveling Wall.  We have just enough volunteers to help, but could use more, especially for setup on 9/28 and tear down on October 3rd.  Ed will put out an updated roster soon.  Please respond to his message if you can help, including being a docent.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 18 September 2010, continued

Fort Carson Military Retiree Appreciation Day, October 16. Member Charles Bogle requested that we attend this event with the museum, and we agreed (Motion-Mike Law, Second, Jim McNamee.  Charles will arrange for a volunteer driver to move the museum from CSU/Pueblo to Fort Carson for storage until the 16th.  We need volunteers to help with this event.  We would especially like to have our Colorado Springs members help out.  Please contact Ed.

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School—Jim McNamee reported that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640 are planning a tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans on Friday, April 8, 2011.  Jim recently received a call from Mr. Kelly Gonzales of Prairie View asking if the chapter would like to participate with an

exhibit of our museum artifacts, as Ed and Jim did at a Northridge High School (Greeley) tribute for Korean War veterans in April 2006.  Mr. Gonzales was on the Northridge faculty at the time and organized the tribute.  Jim told him that we would like to bring the entire museum in April, if

that was ok with him and with our chapter members.  He was very receptive to the idea, as were the chapter members at this meeting.  Mike Law stated that using the museum to help educate youth about the Vietnam War was one of the primary reasons we built it.

Jim will distribute a flyer about the event in the near future.  He asked that members spread the word in the veteran community.  Jeff Roy stated that he would distribute the flyer to the MOPH local chapters.

Invitation to John Grauff’s Christmas party—John passed out invitations and cordially invited all to his and Laurel’s (his daughter) annual Christmas party, to be held on December 4, 2010, at 6:00 pm.   He asked for RSVPs NLT November 24, 2010.  Jim will forward contact information and a map via e-mail in the near future.  If you are free that evening, you should make plans to attend.  The decorations and hospitality are first rate.

Next Meeting: The October 16th meeting will be held immediately following the Fort Carson event at a location to be determined.  Information will follow.

Ed adjourned the meeting at 11:40

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Gary Hurelle called the meeting to order at 1015 at American Legion Post Number 1. Present were Hal Bergdahl, Rick Beaver, Doug Neil, Bill Robie, Walt Wise, John Hargleroad, Jerry Marshall, Greg Mann, Phil Lanphier, John Grauff, Mike Law and yours truly Ed Fickes, who acted as secretary.

Minutes and Treasurer’s Report. February meeting minutes were approved (with the correction that Walt Wise is Vice President). In the absence of Treasurer, Jim McNamee,  both the February and March Treasurer’s reports where approved as submitted by Jim in advance of the meeting. Dues of $20 were collected from Greg Mann and will be deposited by Fickes.

Business and Committee Reports:

Rick Beaver reported on last week’s meeting of the Museum Improvement Committee and outlined the phases of construction and installation of the pilot’s and mock cockpit, cabinets and jump seat – after much discussion and input, all were asked to watch the yahoo site for information concerning needs and wants as the plans develop.

Walt Wise gave an update on the fact that the new healthcare bill should not affect those on Tri-care also reminded all that if they do not have a VA Service agent working on their behalf – they should get one soon.

Ed Fickes reported on the summer “Open House BBQ” and it was decided to give Don Rice August 14th and 21st as possible dates for the picnic at Leprino’s Hanger at Jeffco/Metro Airport. Once Don has selected best date for him – plans will be developed as to how best invite others associated with [‘Combat’, ‘Helicopter’, ‘Service’]. Mann volunteered to handle this task and it will include an RSVP requirement, as well as a limit on number of guests/kids that non-members can bring (limited by totals we can serve and feed – to be set by Don Rice). Hopefully the Museum improvements will be well along and it can be setup at Leprino’s. Depending on availability – we may or not have flying or static display helicopters available. We would hope to obtain the RSVPs and charge only members and accept donations from other attendees.

Ed Fickes also reported about feedback from Bill McPherson in Cripple Creek concerning this year’s event and possibility of getting some floor cleats for future jump seat installation in the Museum. Bill’s response to Fickes’ inquiry was that those recently elected in Cripple Creek were no longer veteran friendly and were going to hold a motorcycle rally instead. McPherson has resigned as City Manager, but is still in possession of his UH-1M. He has offered, and members voted to accept, his donation of his personal pilot’s seat for use in the Museum – members also voted to hold the April 17th meeting in Golden (most likely at the Buffalo Rose – Robie will confirm) to accept delivery from Bill at the Museum. Members authorized Fickes to purchase 2 bottles of single malt scotch for the presentation – one for Bill and one to share.

Ed Fickes reminded all of the “Honor Flight – Welcome Home” the chapter will host at Signature Flight Hanger on Saturday April 24th –expected time is 2000hrs, details will follow. Members authorized the purchase of water, cookies, etc for this event. Also the Evans, CO VFW will hold a benefit all you can eat breakfast to benefit the Honor Flight on Sunday March 28th -0830-1100 – Presentation of plaque to Bill Brewster, who has hauled the Museum to venues for the past 5-6 years, will be made – more info to follow.

Gary Hurelle reminded of elections at the June meeting, which resulted in tendering of several nominations: Phil Lanphier/President and Walt Wise/VP- more nominations welcomed at future meetings. ●Meeting was adjourned at 1145.

Respectfully submitted,

Ed Fickes, Acting Secretary

DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

February 20, 2010

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Elect Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 1010 at American Legion Post Number 1. Present were Hal Bergdahl, Rick Beaver, Doug Niel, Bill Robie, Bob Simms, John Hargleroad and yours truly Ed Fickes, who acted as secretary.

Minutes and Treasurer’s Report. January meeting minutes were approved as posted on the website. In the absence of Tres – Jim McNamee, there was no Treasurer’s report. Dues of $20 were collected from Hal Bergdahl…Rick Beaver purchased a VHPA polo shirt of $18 and made a $2.00 donation and $2.00 in ‘welcome home’ bracelet sales at Legion Post #1 were accounted for and will be deposited by Ed Fickes next week along with a check for at model sale at the Greeley Airport.

Walt reminded all that if they do not have a VA Service agent working on their behalf – they should get one soon…also that he expect the government to be looking at VA and retired military benefits and healthcare as a way to make their programs work.

A long discussion was had on membership – more directly new/renewed membership and how we can continue to grow. The thought being we could become more inclusive and not limited as currently to VN pilot’s and crewmembers. The general consensus was that we should hold a summer “Open House”, BBQ if you will and invite all those associated with [‘Combat’, ‘Helicopter’, ‘Service’], hereafter called the “Associated Group’…It was suggested that Contact be made to Don Rice as to the date and availability of the Leprino Hanger for this. (Ed Fickes will contact Don). Once a date has been set and selected – invites will be made to all members of organizations and individuals, who would qualify to become part  of the “Associated Group” and their spouses. We would hope to obtain RSVP’s for such an event and charge only members and accept donations from other attendees.

Helicopter War Museum Committee. Robie reminded all that the HWM improvement committee is scheduled to meet March 11th in Golden…notice to be sent out via yahoo group.

Bill Robie updated on the status of the future of ‘Model Sales’, as a source of fund raising…with the new ownership of the model distributorship the costs of model to us may become prohibited and/or we may be able to pre-purchase ‘lots’ of models, say 25 – 50 at a cost allowing us to resell at a respectable profit.

Mention was made of the expense of certain events at the upcoming 2010 VHPA Reunion in San Diego – regardless a show of hands indicated 7 of the 8 members present plan to attend.

The March 20th meeting will be held at the American Legion Post #1 at I-25 & Yale.

The meeting was adjourned at 1115.

Respectfully submitted,

Ed Fickes, Acting Secretary
