DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

21 MAY 2011

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 1000 at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale Avenue.

Members Present: Walt Wise, Phil Lanphier, Brian Foote, Fred Lyssy, Ed Fickes, Mike Law, John Grauff, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Steve Swaim, Carl Cavalluzzi, Carl Tafoya, Mike Hammer, Bill Spencer, and Jim McNamee.  Because we had some returning members, Walt had everyone introduce themselves.

The minutes of the April meeting were approved (Mike Law moved, Carl Tafoya seconded).  The Treasurer’s Report for May was approved (Ed Fickes moved, Mike Law seconded).

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School on April 8th: Mike Law asked how the tribute went.  Jim McNamee stated that it was a very impressive and moving event that the faculty and students of Prairie View High School in Henderson gave on Friday, April 8, 2011.  Several chapter members attended and displayed the Helicopter War Museum (HWM) for over 2,000 students and faculty during the day.  In addition, chapter member Bill McPherson displayed his Huey, which was very well received.

Upcoming Events: Ed Fickes discussed upcoming events and sent around duty rosters.  Enough members have now committed to working these events to enable us to commit to them.  We can always use more volunteers to docent the museum, of course. Ed will send out the updated rosters with more details and directions via the chapter e-mail and chat page.

June 9th-12th—Fort Carson Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veterans:  We will set up the museum from 1400 to 1700 on June 9th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 10th through the 12th, and pack it up late on the 12th. Bill McPherson will display his Huey next to the HWM and the AVTT Traveling Wall will be present. The Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Commission probably also will participate in this event.  The event will take place outside Fort Carson’s Gate 1 on Hwy 115, south of Colorado Springs.  The museum will be transported from Greeley to Fort Carson by Shepherd Enterprises of Greeley.  The driver then will move to the museum to the Golden storage location for the July 4th celebration (see below).

July 16th—Fly In at the Hays, Kansas Airport: We have been invited by the airport manager to display the HWM at this fly in.  The organizers will pay the HWM transportation costs and also provide three motel rooms.  We will set up the HWM from 1400 to 1700 on the 15th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 16th, and pack for the return trip the morning of the 17th.

Rocky Mountain Region Reunion follow up (see the March and April minutes): Fred Lyssy (who has been doing the research and planning for this event along with Greg Mann) stated that they have talked with the Doubletree and Red Lion Hotels on Quebec Street (south of I-70).  He said that both offered very good terms, but that the Doubletree’s terms probably were better.  After discussion of the terms, the members agreed with him and decided on the Doubletree.  The tentative reunion date is October 8, 2011.  Rooms will be priced at $89 per night, and we will have a free hospitality suite.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 21 May 2011, continued

The hotel has no problem with us using the suite for a reception and/or breakfast room where we provide the food, coffee, liquor, etc.  They will cater a dinner for an all inclusive cots of less than $40 per person, depending on the entrée/service style, and would provide space for us to display the HWM.

After a discussion of possible activities (a tour of Buckley AFB was one suggestion and the Botanical gardens another) and costs, the members voted to proceed with the event and to provide a budget of $2,000 for notice costs, supplies, down payments, etc.  The funds will come from the chapter general fund, and most probably will be recovered by a registration fee and food and drink sales in the Hospitality Suite.  There was discussion about how to advertise the event, and Mike Law provided suggestions as to how we could cut costs.  Fred and Greg will proceed, but would like to have a volunteer or two to help out.

WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home Reception: Walt Wise talked about the reception, which he stated was a great event for all concerned.  Ed stated that the next Honor Flight trip will be on September 11, 2011.  He will verify the return date so that we can plan to host the reception.

Channel 7 Interviews follow up (see the March minutes): Walt stated that the Channel 7 News story about Vietnam pilots who didn’t make it back from Vietnam will air on Memorial Day at 1800.

Report on HWM Grant Request Efforts: Phil Lanphier and Fred Lyssy stated that the grant request to the Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Commission was about finished.  Fred discussed the items we are asking for in the grant, which tentatively total approximately $20,000.  After discussion, the members decided to have Fred talk with Ed about projected transportation expenses and then proceed with the request.  Ed and Phil will finish the draft and submit it with Walt’s signature.

July 4th—Independence Day Celebration in Golden: Bill Robie stated that the Golden Lions Club still has to give the final approval to our displaying the HWM at this event, but that it probably would be a go.  If we get final approval, we will reposition the HWM from Fort Carson to its Golden location, and leave it there until we transport it to Hays.  Bill will arrange to have the HWM positioned in its July 4th location and then returned to its Golden storage location.  Bill will get the final okay for our participation from the Lions Club and then work with them on logistics.  Once we receive the okay, Ed will send out the details and a duty roster.  (Note—subsequent to the meeting, Bill received approval from the Lions Club and sent out a notice.)

Model Sales: Bill stated that he can get 20 models for $29.50 each or 40 for $25.00 each and asked which lot, if either, the members would like him to purchase and whether he should buy a variety of models.  The members voted to buy a variety of 20 models (Motion-Mike law, Second John Hargleroad).  We will sell the models and use the proceeds for museum maintenance and development, as we have for several years.

Upcoming Elections: Jim talked about the June chapter officer elections.  He stated that the current nominees are Phil Lanphier for President, Hal Bergdahl for Vice President and Jim McNamee for Secretary/Treasurer.  The election will not be held until the June meeting, so nominations are still open.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 21 May 2011, continued

He also mentioned that the members had voted several years ago to hold an e-mail election if there were multiple nominees for one or more positions and that the new officers would not take office until after the VHPA National Reunion.  This sparked a discussion that resulted in the members deciding that only members that are present at the June meeting elections were eligible to vote (Motion-Walt Wise, Second-Phil Lanphier).  The members also voted to have the newly elected officers take over their duties at the end of the meeting in which they were elected (Motion-Ed Fickes, Second-Walt Wise).  Finally, the members decided that nominees did not have to be present at the June meeting to be elected, but that they did have to accept their nominations.

Chapter Clothing: Jim stated that he has the chapter shirts and hats that members ordered, and also has some extras for sale to members at cost and to non-members at a mark-up.  He will have the items at future meetings and chapter events.

Next Meetings:

The June 18th and August 20th meetings will be held at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale.  We will hold chapter elections at the June meeting and the new chapter officers will take over at the close of the meeting.  As usual, there will not be a meeting in July.  John Hargleroad will reserve meeting rooms for the meetings.

Walt adjourned the meeting at 1145.

16 APRIL 2011

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 1000 at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale Avenue.

Members Present: Walt Wise, Phil Lanphier, Fred Lyssy, Jeff Roy, John Grauff, Greg Mann, Mike Silva, Hal Bergdahl, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Steve Swaim, Carl Cavalluzzi, Carl Tafoya, Greg McMahon, Rick Beaver, and Jim McNamee.  Because we had several returning members, Walt had everyone introduce themselves.

The minutes of the March meeting were approved (Fred Lyssy moved, Greg Mann seconded).  The Treasurer’s Report for April was approved (John Hargleroad moved, Jeff Roy seconded).

Channel 7 Interviews follow up (see the March minutes): Walt stated that the Channel 7 News story about Vietnam pilots who didn’t make it back from Vietnam will air on Memorial Day at 1800.

Rocky Mountain Region Reunion follow up (see the March minutes): Fred Lyssy and Greg Mann discussed the research they have done on possible venues for a reunion of Rocky Mountain era Vietnam pilots.  They have been zeroing in on the Golden area and discussed the pricing for two hotels, which would be rather expensive for the time frame being considered (early fall).  They concentrated on Golden because there are several things to do in that area.  Jeff Roy mentioned that he recently coordinated a large event for the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), and was successful in arranging low rates and other amenities at the Doubletree Hotel in the Stapleton area.  After discussion, the members decided to continue pursuing the possibility.  Fred and Greg will research the Stapleton option and look into sending out a “save the date” postcard or e-mail to pilots on the list of Rocky Mountain area pilots that Mike Law provided after the March meeting.

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School on April 8th: Jim McNamee talked about the tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans that the faculty and students of Prairie View High School in Henderson gave on Friday, April 8, 2011.  Several chapter members attended and displayed the Helicopter War Museum (HWM) for over 2,000 students and faculty during the day.  In addition, chapter member Bill McPherson displayed his Huey.  The ceremony itself was held in the school gymnasium and was attended by several hundred veterans and hundreds of spectators.  It was a very impressive and moving event.

Upcoming Events: Jim discussed upcoming events and sent around duty rosters that Ed Fickes is maintaining.  Enough members have now committed to working these events to enable us to commit to them.  We can always use more volunteers, of course.  Ed will send out the updated rosters and more details

May 2nd–WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home Reception: Ed mentioned that the chapter again will host a reception for WWII veterans returning from a visit to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.  As usual, it will be at the DIA Signature Flight Facility from 2000 to 2100.  The chapter will provide refreshments (Ed will procure them).

Draft Meeting Minutes, 16 April 2011, continued

June 9th-12th—Fort Carson Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veterans: Chapter member Charles Bogle has confirmed the dates for this event and invited us to display the HWM.  He also has invited Bill McPherson to display his Huey next to the HWM.  The AVTT Traveling Wall will be present. The Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Commission probably also will participate in this event.   We will set up the museum from 1400 to 1700 on June 9th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 10th through the 12th, and pack it up late on the 12th.

July 4th—Independence Day Celebration in Golden: Bill Robie discussed the possibility of displaying the HWM at this event, which is sponsored by the Lions Club.  After discussion of transportation logistics and a straw vote of interest by the members, we decided to attend the event.  We will reposition the HWM from Fort Carson to its Golden location, and leave it there until we transport it to Hays.  Bill will arrange to have the HWM positioned in its July 4th location and then returned to its Golden storage location.  Bill will get the final okay for our participation from the Lions Club and then work with them on logistics.  Once we receive the okay, Ed will send out the details and a duty roster.

Report on HWM Grant Request Efforts: As mentioned in the March minutes, the Vietnam War Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with its 5-year long Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  Phil Lanphier and Fred Lyssy have been revising our old grant documents and reported on their progress.  They mentioned that there is a lot of competition for these type grants, but we should continue to pursue it.  Jeff Roy confirmed that statement, and said that the MOPH has given out several grants to military museums in recent years.  He said he couldn’t guarantee anything, but that we could also submit a request to the MOPH.

LZ Mary Ann Battle Commemoration: Mike Silva mentioned that he had attended a commemoration of the March 28, 1971, battle at LZ Mary Ann, where we suffered 30 KIA and 87 WIA in 45 minutes.  He participated in that battle and its aftermath and gave his eyewitness account to us and recommended that we read Sappers in the Wire, a book about the battle.  He also mentioned that he visited the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning and the National Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker.  He said both were great and well worth visiting.

Soc Trang Tigers Reunion: Hal Bergdahl mentioned that the Soc Trang Tigers will be having a reunion at Fort Carson from June 16th to the 19th.

People House: Rick Beaver, who runs a People House program for veterans with traumatic brain injuries or psychological disorders, discussed how he works with veterans who are working to change their lives.  He mentioned that People House is having a fund raiser yard sale on May 21st, and that they would appreciate any donations, especially small household items and clothing.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 16 April 2011, continued

Upcoming Elections: Jim talked about the June chapter officer elections.  We will elect a President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer, all of whom will take office after the VHPA National Reunion. Current nominees are Phil Lanphier for President, Hal Bergdahl for Vice

President and Jim McNamee for Secretary/Treasurer.  The election will not be held until the June meeting, so nominations are still open.

Clothing Order: Jim stated that River Graphics completed the clothing order, and he will pick it up in a few days.  He will have the shirts and hats that members ordered at the upcoming meetings and events.  He also will have some extra shirts and hats for sale to members at cost and to non-members at a mark-up.

Veterans’ Legislation, etc. Update: Jeff Roy talked about pending legislation that the MOPH is tracking and on which they are working:

Colorado veterans’ programs—The funding is going to expire in 2 years.  The state and MOPH are looking for alternate funds.

Veterans’ homes—They are in good shape and improving.

Tricare—Congress is looking at cuts, which may include eliminating Tricare for Life or increasing premiums.  Veterans’ organizations are fighting it, and there might not be any movement on it while there are wars and overall healthcare debates going on.

Medicare—There is a bill in Congress that would require Medicare to reimburse VA Hospitals for the care they provide to senior veterans.

Survivor Benefit Plan—The offset repeal, which affects surviving widows, may get passed this year.  It has been in the works for 5 years.

Next Meetings:

The May 21st and June 18th meetings will be held at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale.  We will hold chapter elections at the June meeting.  As usual, there will not be a meeting in July, but the new chapter officers will take over as soon as the VHPA Reunion ends on July 10th.  John Hargleroad will reserve meeting rooms for the May and June meetings.

Walt adjourned the meeting at 1150.

DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

19 MARCH 2011

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 1015 at The Buffalo Rose Restaurant on 12th and Washington in Golden, Colorado.

Members Present: Walt Wise, Phil Lanphier, Ed Fickes, Mike Law, John Grauff, Greg Mann,

Hal Bergdahl, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Steve Swaim, Doug Neil, Rick Beaver, Fred Lyssy, and Jim McNamee.

The minutes of the February meeting were approved (Mike Law moved, Steve Swaim seconded).  The Treasurer’s Report for March was approved (Mike Law moved, Steve Swaim seconded).

Helicopter War Museum (HWM) Improvement Status: Rick Beaver reported that he had obtained two cabinets to use as HWM storage/display units.  He stated that he would be going over to the trailer storage site after the meeting to get measurements and develop an installation plan.  He invited members to help out.

Ed Fickes showed the 360 degree High Definition Virtual Reality (HDVR) video of a UH-1H cockpit that he obtained from World VR.  He obtained permission to load the video on his computer and show it in the museum.  We will be able to show it on one of our monitors, which will be a tremendous addition to the museum.
Bill Robie discussed the fact that we have two extra seat covers for the pilot’s seat in the HWM cockpit display, one red one that doesn’t fit right and one black one that does.  The members decided to keep the black one as a spare and fix the other one so that it fits (Mike Law will arrange for that).  Once it is ready, we will give it and the extra seat to Bill McPherson, who donated his seat (a better and more complete one than we had) to the museum.

Upcoming Events: Ed Fickes discussed the following events and passed around duty rosters.  He also will send duty rosters on the chat page and through the webmaster.  Details of these events are available on the rosters and in past meeting minutes on the chapter website.

April 8th–Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School: Ed reminded members about the tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640, on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 1600 to 1830.  We are going to set up the Helicopter War Museum (HWM) late in the afternoon on April 7th and display it for students and the public from 0800 to1600 the day of the tribute.

Kelly Gonzales, the Prairie View coordinator of the event, has requested that veterans interested in attending the event register at http://www.namvettribute.org.

May 2nd–WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home Reception: The chapter again will host a reception for WWII veterans returning from a visit to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.  As usual, it will be at the DIA Signature Flight Facility from 2000 to 2100.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 19 March 2011, continued

June 9th-12th—Fort Carson Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veterans: Chapter member Charles Bogle has confirmed the dates for this event and invited us to display the HWM.  The AVTT Traveling Wall will be present. The Vietnam War 50th Anniversary

Commemoration Commission probably also will participate in this event.   We will set up the museum from 1400 to 1700 on June 9th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 10th through the 12th, and pack it up late on the 12th.   We need more volunteers to be able to attend this event.

July 4th—American Heroes Air Show: (Note—We learned after the meeting that the Air Force Academy has cancelled this event.  Therefore, we will not be attending.

July 16th—Fly In at the Hays, Kansas Airport: We have been invited by the airport manager to display the HWM at this fly in.  We will set up the HWM from 1400 to 1700 on the 15th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 16th, and pack it for the return trip the morning of the 17th.

August and September, etc.: As of now, we don’t have any other events scheduled for the museum.  We may have a chapter BBQ again in August or September, if we can talk Don Rice into it.  We also may have a reunion (see below).

HWM Grant Request: Phil Lanphier has been working on a grant request for the HWM.  He has drafted a new request that has elements of the old request that Fred Lyssy and Jim McNamee put together a few years ago.  The new one is more concise, but would use elements of the old one as attachments.  There was some discussion about the grant, and Phil and Fred met after the chapter meeting to plan the next steps.

On a related note, Steve Swaim gave Phil a quote that he obtained for trailer graphics.

New Models: Bill Robie proposed that he be given authority to purchase more assorted models for sale to supplement the HWM maintenance and development fund.  It was approved.
Also, Greg Mann brought up the idea of selling models on E-Bay.

Channel 7 Interviews: Walt stated that he had been interviewed by Channel 7 News for a story about pilots who didn’t make it back from Vietnam.  He said that he thinks that they are looking for more stories with interesting twists.  If you have a story, contact Walt.

Possible Rocky Mountain Region Reunion: Mike Law brought up the fact that at least three VHPA chapters have held very successful reunions of pilots in their regions.  One chapter had 250 people attend.  Mike said that we should consider doing that, since we are always talking about doing new things to attract new members, get old members involved again or involve spouses.   We could shoot for a fall event in Golden or Denver, and advertise it with e-mails and letters.  Fred Lyssy and Rick Beaver volunteered to look into the possibilities, and Mike said that he would prepare a list of VN pilots in this region from VHPA files.

VHPA National Reunions: Mike briefly discussed this year’s reunion in Orlando and next year’s in New Orleans.  The New Orleans reunion will feature the WWII National Museum and will be held in the Hilton on the Mississippi River.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 19 March 2011, continued

Upcoming Elections: Walt mentioned that chapter elections are coming up at the chapter meeting in June, and asked that members be thinking about nominating other members or themselves for office.  We need to elect a President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer, all of whom will take office after the VHPA National Reunion.  Mike Law then nominated (and Ed Fickes seconded) Phil Lanphier for President, Hal Bergdahl for Vice President, and Jim McNamee for Secretary/Treasurer.  Since the election will not be held until June, nominations are still open.

Clothing Order: Jim mentioned that we have a low inventory of chapter shirts and hats and that he plans to order more soon.  He stated that he will send out a notice so that members can order specific items and sizes.  He will be ordering polo shirts (any color), chapter long sleeve poplin shirts and denim shirts, along with the hats.  All will have the embroidered chapter logo.

Next Meeting:

The April 16th meeting will be held at 1000 at American Legion Post Number 1,

I-25 and Yale.  Walt stated that chapter member Jeff Roy, former MOPH National Commander, hopes to attend.

The May 21st meeting has been scheduled tentatively for the American Legion at 1000.  John Hargleroad has reserve meeting rooms for the April and May meetings.

Dues Reminder:  Jim reminded members that 2011 dues ($20) are due.  He has received payment from several members by mail, and all of the members present at the meeting are now current as well.  If you would like to remit your dues by mail, please send a check made payable to RMCVHPA to:

Walt adjourned the meeting at 1145. After the meeting, several members had lunch at the Buffalo Rose.  After that, Rick Beaver, Ed Fickes, Bill Robie, Hal Bergdahl, Steve Swaim, Greg Mann, Phil Lanphier, Fred Lyssy, and Jim McNamee went to the museum to work on the cabinet design and the cockpit display.

The minutes of the January meeting were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Walt Wise seconded).  The Treasurer’s Reports for January and February were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Walt Wise seconded). Dave Coyle’s Funeral: Ed reported that he, John Grauff, and Jim McNamee attended the funeral services on February 12th for Dave Coyle, who drove our museum to several venues beginning with the Memorial Day 2005 trip to Angel Fire.  Dave and his wife, Susan, who usually accompanied him, really enjoyed their trips with us.  Because of this, Susan asked that donations be made to our chapter in lieu of flowers.  The donations totaled $240, which Ed delivered from her to Jim.  She asked that the funds be used for the museum. Upcoming Events: Ed discussed the following events and passed around duty rosters.  He also will send sign up rosters on the chat page and through the webmaster (see his 2/21 message). April 8th–Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School: Ed reminded members about the tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640, are planning for Friday, April 8, 2011 from 1600 to 1830.  We are going to set up the Helicopter War Museum (HWM) late in the afternoon on April 7th and display it for students and the public from 0800 to1600 the day of the tribute. We will pack it up that evening. Kelly Gonzales, the Prairie View coordinator of the event, has requested that veterans interested in attending the event register at http://www.namvettribute.org. July 4th—American Heroes Air Show: Ed and Jim discussed this event.  We have been invited by to display the HWM at the United States Air Force Academy in conjunction with this air show and the AVTT Traveling Wall.  Ed is working on the details, but tentative plans call for setting the HWM up from 0800 to 1100 on the 4th and displaying it until 1900.  The American Heroes Aviation Network puts on several shows each year around the country (see their website –http://www.heroes-airshow.com/). Draft Meeting Minutes, 19 February 2011, continued July 16th—Fly In at the Hays, Kansas Airport: Ed and Walt discussed this event.  We have been invited by the airport manager to display the HWM at this fly in.  The organizers will pay the HWM transportation costs and also provide three motel rooms.  We will set the HWM up from 1400 to 1700 on the 15th, display it from 0800 to 1700 on the 16th, and pack it for the return trip the morning of the 17th. The members voted to attend this event if enough members sign up for the trip. National Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Events/Welcome Home: Jim mentioned again that chapter member Charles Bogle and the Fort Carson Retirees’ Association have scheduled a Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home Ceremony to be held at Fort Carson on June 10, 2011.  His committee has arranged for a Traveling Wall to be present.  The National Commemoration Commission also has agreed to participate in this event.  Jim will contact Charles to find out the exact dates. The Vietnam War Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year long Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  Walt Wise, Phil Lanphier, and Fred Lyssy are exploring this possibility.  For those interested, the Commemoration Commission’s website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/contact.aspx. HWM Outside Graphics: Ed mentioned that he has found a company that will do the HWM graphics for $9,000 to $13,000, which we don’t have right now.  A discussion followed about how beneficial it would be to have helicopter scenes on the HWM, but that we may want to start with only a few panels to keep costs down.  Picture sources and design also were discussed. HWM Revenue Idea: Greg Mann showed examples of various sized high quality but low cost calendars that were printed, with a photograph, by Costco.  He also talked about making a cd of members’ VN pictures.  He stated that these could be used as fund raisers for the HWM. Brick for Dave Coyle?: Ed mentioned that some members had discussed buying a brick in Dave’s memory for the VN War Museum in Mineral Wells, Texas.  After discussion, the members decided that a plaque for the museum would be more visible and appropriate and that idea was approved.  Ed will coordinate the effort, with a cost not to exceed $100. TRICARE Update: Mike Silva mentioned that TRICARE will begin covering veterans’ “kids” under 26 years of age who are not in school.  Contact him for more information.  He also said he is going to Ft Rucker in March if anyone wants him to pick up any mementoes. New Model Source: Bill Robie reported that he has obtained 20 Hueys, 12 CH 46s and other models for us to sell to raise money for the HWM.  The members voted to reimburse him for the purchase and for a sales tax license renewal and the HWM console purchase mentioned below (Ed moved, Walt seconded). HWM Center Console—Bill Robie reported that he had found a source on E-Bay for most of the instruments and radios that we need to complete the HWM’s cockpit display center console.  He purchased the lot for $374.  About the only things remaining for the display are hydraulic and engine control panels and a glare shield.  Bill’s source will try to obtain them. VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 1005 hours at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale Avenue.

Members Present: Walt Wise, Mike Law, Ed Fickes, Rick Beaver, Doug Neil, Hal Bergdahl, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Al Harinck, Steve Swaim, Carl Cavalluzzi, Dan Grigsby, Mike Silva and Jim McNamee.  (Note—Vice President Phil Lanphier had a previous commitment, but arrived just after the meeting ended to talk with Bill Robie about a possible source for wooden models.)

The minutes of the November meeting were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Hal Bergdahl seconded).  The Treasurer’s Report for December was approved (Ed Fickes moved, Bill Robie seconded).  (Note:  Treasurer Jim McNamee reported that he had not yet received the January bank statement.  He will provide the January Treasurer’s Report at the February meeting.  He stated that there were some receipts for model sales (thanks to Bill Robie and Ed Fickes) and dues recently, but no expenses.)

National Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Events/Welcome Home in 2011: Walt mentioned that the chapter committee to work on a grant for our Helicopter War Museum (HWM) in conjunction with this event will begin work soon.  For those who are unaware of this event, Jim stated that chapter member Charles Bogle and the Fort Carson Retirees’ Association have scheduled a Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home ceremony to be held at Fort Carson on June 10, 2011.  His committee has arranged for a Traveling Wall to be present for 7 to 9 days, including June 10th.  The National Commemoration Commission has agreed to participate in the Fort Carson event.  We are going to display the HWM for all or part of the week.

The Vietnam War Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year long Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  For those interested, the Commemoration Commission’s website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/contact.aspx.

Helicopter War Museum Improvement Committee: Rick Beaver mentioned that member Greg McMahon has donated some cabinets for the museum.  Rick wants to get started improving the museum displays, and asked that interested members meet with him after the meeting (several did).  He also showed a North Vietnam flag that his unit captured, and members discussed how to display it.  (Note—The March meeting will be held in Golden, followed by a museum work party.)

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School: Ed Fickes talked about the tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640, are planning on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. We are going to display the HWM the day of the tribute.  Jim and Ed are coordinating the museum’s appearance with Mr. Kelly Gonzales of Prairie View.  Ed stated that there has been a change to the schedule, and that we will be displaying the museum for only one day—Friday, April 8th, from 0800 to 1600.  Most of the students from the campus, which includes elementary and middle schools, will be visiting the museum. Ed will be sending out a duty roster soon to make sure we have enough members to help set up the HWM on Thursday afternoon, docent it on Friday, and pack it up Friday evening.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 15 January 2010, continued

Member Bill McPherson of Cripple Creek, CO, probably will have his UH-1M gunship there, too.  Chapter members will help docent it, as Rick Beaver did in Cripple Creek in 2009.

Kelly Gonzales, the Prairie View coordinator of the event, has requested that veterans who are interested in attending this event register at the event website: http://www.namvettribute.org.

National Vietnam War Commemoration Events/Welcome Home in 2011: Walt mentioned that the chapter committee to work on a museum grant in conjunction with this event will begin work soon. The National Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Commission has agreed to participate in the Fort Carson event.

The Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year Commemoration, and that is why we think there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM (see above).  For those interested, the Commemoration Commission’s website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com.

WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home: Ed mentioned that the chapter again will host the World War II Honor Flight Welcome Home Reception on Monday, May 2nd.  As usual, it will be at the DIA Signature Flight Facility from 2000 to 2100 hours.  The chapter will provide refreshments.  Ed will send out a sign up roster soon.

Possible HWM visit to the Hays, Kansas airport: Walt mentioned that the airport manager of the Hays airport would like us to display the HWM at his airport, possibly on July 4th.  Walt will call him back to get the details and report at the February meeting.

VHPA Aviator Deadline: Walt mentioned that the deadline for our chapter input to The Aviator is at the end of the month.  He asked Ed to prepare an article.  Mike Law mentioned that we should mention the Prairie View event.  (Note: Mike also displayed the new Membership Directory and 2011 calendar and discussed the 2011 VHPA Reunion.)

Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado Members:  Hello—Are you still there? Al Harinck mentioned that we used to have events in Colorado Springs to try to get our southern Colorado members involved again and asked if we planned to continue that effort.  Jim mentioned that we have had several events “down south,” but have had very limited participation since our luncheon in 2005.  The only members that have participated recently are Eric Brettschneider, Bill McPherson, and Charles Bogle, The members decided to keep trying, starting with the VN Vet Welcome Home/VN 50th Anniversary Celebration at Fort Carson in June.

In addition–Rick Beaver mentioned that we have several northern members (including Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska) that we haven’t seen for a while.  We should consider have a meeting or event in Thornton or another northern locale.  Rick will look into it.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 15 January 2010, continued

Chapter BBQ: Mike Law stated that we should start thinking about having another BBQ this summer since it is such a popular event.  We need to contact Don Rice and see if he is willing to be the chef again and if Leprino Aviation will allow us to have it at their facility again.  Also—this year, we will insist on reimbursing Don for his expenses (last year, he donated the meat and beans).

HWM Center Console—Bill Robie mentioned that we need most of the radio switches and the emergency hydraulics and main fuel switches for the HWM’s cockpit display center console.  Please contact him if you know of a source.

100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation: Mike Law mentioned that the Navy is going to host a celebration in San Diego, California February 12th.  It is going to be a big deal, with over 75 aircraft on display and lots of activities.  For information, go to www.mwrtoday.com/cona.

Chapter Chat Page: Bill mentioned that members could post information and updates on the chapter chat page at rmcvhpa@yahoogroups.com.

Flight School Video—Mike Silva mentioned that there was a video making the rounds on the internet about WOC flight training in 1966 that was quite interesting.  He will try to distribute it via the chat page (he did).  Rick said that we should try to get a DVD for the HWM.

Dues Reminder:  Jim reminded members that 2011 dues ($20) are due.  He has received payment from several members by mail, and most of the members present at the meeting are now current as well.  If you would like to remit your dues by mail, please send a check made out to RMCVHPA to:

DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

20 NOVEMBER 2010

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

VIETNAM HELICOPTER PILOTS ASSOCIATION

President Walt Wise called the meeting to order at 10:00 am at American Legion Post #1, I-25 and Yale Avenue.

Members Present: Walt Wise, Ed Fickes, John Grauff, Brian Foote, Phil Lanphier, Fred Lyssy, Hal Bergdahl, Gary Hurelle, John Hargleroad, Bill Robie, Carl Cavalluzzi (new member), Dave Parvin (returning member), and Jim McNamee.

The minutes of the October meeting were approved (Ed Fickes moved, Gary Hurelle seconded).  The Treasurer’s Report for November was approved (Walt Wise moved, Brian Foote seconded).

Fort Carson Military Retiree Appreciation Day, October 16
–Jim McNamee mentioned this event again, stating that, although this was only a 4-hour event, we had over 200 visitors to the Helicopter War Museum (HWM).  Many of them were Vietnam veterans and Retired Enlisted Association members.  He stated that the cockpit display was a hit with the women visitors from the REA as well as the kids.

Tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans at Prairie View High School—Jim again mentioned that the students and faculty of Prairie View High School, 12909 E. 120th Ave, Henderson, CO 80640 are planning a tribute to Vietnam Era Veterans on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Chapter members voted at the September meeting to take the HWM to the tribute.  Jim and Ed are coordinating the museum’s appearance with Mr. Kelly Gonzales of Prairie View.  Ed has arranged with Mr. Gonzales for us to display the HWM for 2 days, April 7 and 8, so that more students will be able to tour it. He will be sending out a duty roster soon to make sure we have enough members to help set up the HWM on Wednesday, docent it for both days, and pack it up on Saturday morning.  Member Bill McPherson of Cripple Creek, CO, will probably have his UH-1M gunship there, too.  Chapter members can help docent it, as Rick Beaver did in Cripple Creek in 2009.

During the discussion, Vice President Phil Lanphier asked if it would be possible to move the cockpit display outside during the event so that more students could experience it without creating a logjam inside the HWM.  Bill Robie said that it was feasible, and the members decided to look into the possibility.  They also decided that Jim should look for and buy a 10’X10’ 3-walled tent to house the exhibit in case of inclement weather.  Jim also mentioned that he would like to improve the HWM exhibits to make them more educational for students, which was discussed in conjunction with the National Vietnam Commemoration events mentioned below.

Jim will distribute a flyer about the Prairie View event in the near future.  He asked that members spread the word in the veteran community.  Jeff Roy has already distributed an announcement to the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) local chapters.

National Vietnam War Commemoration Events/Welcome Home in 2011: Jim mentioned that he had gotten more information from Charles Bogle (member from Westcliffe, CO) about the Vietnam Veteran Welcome Home ceremony to be held at Fort Carson on June 10, 2011.  His committee has arranged for a Traveling Wall to be present for 7 to 9 days, including June 10th.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 20 November 2010, continued

(Note—As previously noted—Ed has arranged with the AVTT Traveling Wall Organization for us to display the HWM whenever the wall is being displayed in our area.)  In addition, Charles said that the US Vietnam War Commemoration Commission (mentioned in last months’ minutes) has committed to hold events at Fort Carson during that time frame.  This is going to be a big event, and we plan to have the Helicopter War Museum there.

Jim mentioned that Charles has been in contact with one of the DOD organizers and provided him with the contact information.  The Commission is very interested in educational possibilities in conjunction with this 5-year Commemoration, and there is a possibility that we could receive some grant money from them to improve the HWM.  Walt asked for volunteers to join him in seeking a grant, and Fred Lyssy and Phil Lanphier volunteered.  The committee will update the grant documents that Fred and Jim previously prepared and proceed from there.

Bill Robie mentioned that we ought to develop a “wish list” that we could use to determine the amount we should request, and then the committee should work with the curator (currently Jim) to make improvements.  Jim said that he would update the list he originally prepared in 2005 and give it to the committee.  Two of the big things we would like to accomplish if we get a grant would be to paint graphics on the sides of the trailer (Ed Fickes will research this) and build permanent display cabinets (Rick Beaver has been working on this).

As an aside—Phil mentioned that we should have some sort of history of the museum from the beginning to help with our grant efforts.  Jim said that we have pictures from most of the venues that we could use and Ed said that he had duty rosters and some after action reports from the venues.  They will provide them to the grant committee.

Jim passed out two newsletters from the Commemoration Commission, whose website is http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/contact.aspx.

New VA Hospital Update: Jim distributed a news release about the new VA Hospital to be built on the Fitzsimmons campus.  The hospital will cost $800 million and should be completed in 2014.

This brought up the question as to whether we would be hosting a Christmas Cookie Party at the VA Hospital Nursing Center, as we have done for the past 5 or 6 years.  Jim said that the VA had new rules for such events that, among other things, prohibited the use of anything other than packaged foods.  The members discussed this at a previous meeting, and decided not to host the event this year because of the restrictions.  This also precludes having another pig roast.

WWII Honor Flight Welcome Home—Ed introduced a motion that the chapter again host the welcome home at DIA.  Jim seconded, and the motion passed, as long as it doesn’t conflict with the Prairie View event.  It will be in April 2011.

PTSD compensation reminder: Walt reiterated a point from the September meeting—There are new rules concerning PTSD qualification that relax the requirements somewhat.  Helicopter pilots, especially those with purple hearts or medals for valor or heroism, should have an easier time proving that they suffer from PTSD.  There are also new rules concerning other compensation. Walt recommended checking with an MOPH, VFW, or American Legion service officer.

Models—Bill mentioned that we have lost our low cost source for models and that we have only about 20 left.  We don’t have any Hueys or Blackhawks.

Draft Meeting Minutes, 20 November 2010, continued

HWM Center Console—Bill also mentioned that we need most of the switches, etc, for the HWM’s cockpit display center console.  Please contact him if you know of a source.

Veterans Day 2011—Bill mentioned that we should make sure that we do something with the HWM for Veterans Day next year.  Possibilities include Greeley and Golden.

Member News—

New member Carl Cavalluzzi of Conifer attended his first meeting after joining the chapter at the Fort Carson Military Appreciation Day mentioned above.

Returning member Dave Parvin is a sculptor.  Two of his sculptures are featured in the Veterans’ Tribute Garden near the Butterfly Pavilion.

Brian Foote mentioned that member Terry Sullivan is retiring as the head of the Colorado Springs Travel Bureau at the end of November.

Party Reminders:  (Note—Information and directions have been provided previously.  If you have misplaced them, contact Jim McNamee at hawk36101@msn.com.)

–John Grauff’s Christmas party—John again passed out invitations and cordially invited all to his and Laurel’s (his daughter) annual Christmas party, to be held on December 4, 2010, at 6:00 pm.   He asked for RSVPs NLT November 24, 2010, although he said that you can just show up if your plans change.  If you are free that evening, you should make plans to attend.  The decorations and hospitality are first rate.  You don’t need to bring anything.

–Greg Mann’s Annual Chapter Christmas Party–Greg has scheduled his annual party at his home in Lone Tree for the Saturday after John’s party, December 11th.  This is a pot luck affair, so please RSVP to Greg by November 30th so that he can suggest a dish to bring. This is also a party you should plan to attend, as past parties have been enjoyed by all.

Next Meeting:  As is customary, there will not be a chapter meeting in December.

The January 15th meeting will be held at American Legion Post No.1 on I-25 and Yale at 10:00 am. Jim will begin collecting chapter annual dues ($20) at the meeting.

Walt adjourned the meeting at 11:15.
